I played this with my husband and parents, and found that it took about 1. So this game is based largely on luck, though you can attempt to throw in some strategy and skill, which can then be undermined by the other players.
The concept is that each of you owns 6 race horses, and you enter a series of 6 races. There is prize money for the winning horse, 2nd place etc, and you can win money by betting successfully on who you think will win. Generally the amount you could win from a bet is far higher than the prize money, forcing you to take a gamble. The fun comes into it when, one of the players clearly doesn't want their own horse to win, and starts deliberately taking it's sweet time to get to the finish line, and this is the horse you probably bet all your money on.
Each player is also equipped with a number of 'cards' that mix things up further, for instance, making a horse fall over at a fence, or forcing the whole race to be restarted if you do not like the outcome. It was very funny when several players targeted the same player who had been in the lead, causing them to lose immediately. The good thing about this game is that element of being a bit ruthless and sabotaging other players.
It's also more interesting than a traditional board game. I do not think it would be suitable for young children, due to the concept of having to sabotage others and be tactical. It did also require a good half an hour of reading the instructions before hand, in order to get game play going quickly on the day. Overall I really enjoyed this game, and would recommend it to others. I have since lent it to family and friends to play.
One person found this helpful. I bought this game about 4 months ago when looking for a new and different board game. Having read the reviews initially I was impressed that pretty much everyone thought this game was worth playing. Finally last night me and my wife invited her parents round for dinner and we are known for having a few drinks and playing a few games of cards or other board games. This was the chance I had been waiting for I would suggest not being too drunk before learnimng to play Setting up of the game is fairly straight forward and I would def reccomend familiarising yourself with what and how the "Really Nasty Cards" work so you know when and how to play them.
As it was our first time we read the instructions as we went along so this takes a little more time but after we had established how the game works in principle you will pick it up very quickly. The object is simple to finish the game with teh most amount of money which can be earned in 1 of 2 ways. During the race you roll a dice and move the amount shown, you can move forward and sideways, some course sections allow you to double your roll if you had landed on the relevant land and position.
This game is a must, we had a blast playing and as such will be making more planned nights of drink and nasty horse racing :. As a family we love playing board games have amassed quite a few over the years. There were two reasons the description promised enjoyment and as usual Amazon were by far the cheapest. The game is fun, even the wife, who has no interest or knowledge of horse racing found it enjoyable.
The gameplay instructions are easy to understand and even if you play for all the races the time passes quickly, always a good indicator of the gameplay. When we first played it with friends we had intended to play for a couple of races and then quit, we actually completed the race card. It has quite a novel gameplay, the winner is the one with the most money which is amassed from prize money and betting on the races. You don't have to win any races to be the winner as you can bet on any horse and then try and help it win, at the expense of your own.
The one reservation is, make sure all the players get on because the title says it all, the aim of the game is to win by whatever means. That apart this is a game that over time could even rival 'Monopoly' in the popularity stakes. I bought this item about 12 months ago and have played about a dozen time since. It is a really brilliant and well thought through concept that blends a certain amount of skill with a fair slice of luck.
The game's name is well deserved as inevitably players need to be ruthless and use their nasty cards wisely to increase their chances of winning. Quite often a well deserved winning position is stolen away by an opponent on the last round which can be pretty frustrating and I would imagine it could even lead to a bit of fisty cuffs. Newbies to the game will be at a slight disadvantage to seasoned pundits and it takes a couple of games to understand the rules, hone your strategy and learn to make the most of the hand you are dealt.
Although a little on the expensive side, the quality of the board, cards and other items is very high and overall it is easily a worthwhile purchase as it will provide hours of fun. Surely One of the best board games around. See all reviews. Pages with related products. See and discover other items: party games for family , racing track , horse products , horse card games.

Firstly, by getting your horse placed first, second or third in the race and secondly, by placing bets on winning horses. So, how does the game go? The game lasts for a race meeting of six races. Each player gets six horses, one for each race. The horses are graded 1 to being the best horse and 6 being the worst horse. Before racing starts each owner has to decide which race each horse will run.
There are other matters too, such as working out the betting odds, and lots of shady dealings will likely ensue. The elected bookmaker controls the game--lane placings are drawn before each race, and the horse that draws the inside lane starts. Movement is decided by a throw of the dice--one length forward for one, two lengths for two and so on.
There are rules that control the manner of racing as well, such as changing lanes, cornering and blocking, plus the special Early Pace, Quicken Up and Finish Well sections that give extra momentum for your horse. There is also a set of mischief cards to help you create havoc with the other horses and riders in the race. This game really is brilliant--it lets you bow to your worst instincts without any apologies.
